GOING GREENER:
THE OIL AND GAS
INDUSTRY IS PART OF
FUTURE GREEN SOLUTIONS
The oil and gas industry is part of the energy system
today and will be in the future. Innovation is helping
the oil and gas industry in the green transition
Denmark has an ambition to make a green transition and gas industry, too. This is very high on the agendas of
and to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions: the companies producing oil and gas in the North Sea.
By 2030, Denmark aims to have reduced its CO2 emis- During the years spent transitioning to renewable en-

In order to reach both goals, a considerable amount of from more fossil fuels to more renewables, we must an-

Quite a bit of innovation will also be required in the oil Denmark is self-sufficient with regard to energy and
is the only European Union member with a net export
value for oil and gas.
And even though the objective is to become a society
that does not depend on fossil fuels, using Danish oil
and gas to get there is the preferred option. Denmark’s
production of crude oil happens to be the world’s
greenest due to Danish crude oil being of a high quality
and a co-product of natural gas. Last year, the esteemed
Stanford University published a study on the most cli-
mate friendly places to produce oil in the world — and
Denmark was ranked the highest.
It is not the quality of the oil alone that makes Danish
production the greenest: it is also the innovative mindset
and ambition shared by companies producing oil and gas
in the North Sea.
At Energy Innovation Cluster, we experience this first-
hand, as our oil- and gas-producing members team up
with us to go greener.
Currently, we have several projects driving in-demand
innovation in the offshore oil and gas industry:
We have the H2SMAN project, where the aim is to create
and test a new H2S management system, thus reducing
Glenda Napier the need for environmentally damaging H2S scavenger
overdosing.
